Event Honoring Division Soldiers
A commemorative event honoring the valor and sacrifices of Pennsylvania’s 28th Infantry Division during World War II will take place in Gathemo, France, on June 7, 2025. This ceremony holds deep historical significance, marking the Division’s role in the fierce fighting that occurred in the area in August 1944.
While the events of that summer may have faded from broader public memory, the citizens of Gathemo have not forgotten. In a profound gesture of remembrance and gratitude, a new memorial will be unveiled bearing the names of nine soldiers from the 28th Infantry Division who were killed in action during the liberation of the town. Among them are three Pennsylvanians:
PFC Merritt Boyle, 109th Infantry Regiment – Chinchilla, PA
PVT Irwin S. Fox, 110th Infantry Regiment – Pittsburgh, PA
Staff Sergeant Encil W. Glover, 110th Infantry Regiment – Greene County, PA
Additionally, the town will honor the Division further by renaming a street in its memory.
The ceremony will begin at 5:00 AM EST and will be livestreamed on the Mike Pride Museum YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@grpicardie3945.
We encourage viewers to subscribe to the channel to witness this meaningful tribute.
